Christmas Unwrapped: Memoirs of an Italian Christmas
My childhood was steeped in rich Italian traditions, as the daughter of an Italian immigrant, Christmas has always held a special place in my heart—not for the presents or decorations, but for the traditions and connections that remind me of what truly matters during the holiday and winter seasons. For my family, Christmas Eve is the big night of celebration. And in true Italian fashion, it revolves around two things: food and family, okay three things, maybe there's a little wine too.
Our roots from the southern Italian coast inspire a seafood feast that takes center stage. One of the most special traditions is the “seven fishes,” (cherished by some, some can do without the sea food) a mix of dishes that reflect the abundance and love we pour into our meals. For those non seafood lovers worry not—there’s always an array of other dishes, each made with care and love. When you cook with joy, intention, and love, it transforms the meal into something more than just belly nourishing—it becomes soul-nourishing. The energy infused into every dish elevates it, creating a deeper connection to those who gather around the table to share it.
But more than the food, it’s about who we share it with. Family, including cousins who feel more like siblings, gathers around to play games, laugh, and simply be present with one another. Recently, we’ve started a new tradition of spending Christmas vacation style. It’s been a beautiful reminder that what matters isn’t where we are but in the company that's around you.
For me, the true meaning of Christmas isn’t found under the tree—it’s found in the moments we share with the people we love. It’s about being present, fully engaged in the joy and connection that make life meaningful.
In many ways, the spirit of Christmas feels like the spirit of a good Sunday dinner. IYKYK. Growing up in a big, close-knit Italian family, Sunday dinners were sacred. They were a time to come together, share stories, and enjoy each other’s company over a table filled with love and laughter. Christmas Eve is like that, only amplified—a celebration of love, family, and life’s simple pleasures.
Presence Over Presents
Life moves fast, and it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle. After working retail for many years my hope for the future is that this time of year and the holidays remind us to slow down and focus on what’s most important: the people we hold dear. Being present—truly present—requires us to let go of distractions and bring our full attention to this moment. On Christmas there's nowhere else to be, nothing left to do but fully enjoy these days.
Cultivating presence, this is where meditation comes in! Meditation isn’t just about sitting quietly; it’s about cultivating the ability to be fully present in your life. It helps us create space to appreciate the here and now, whether we’re sharing a meal, enjoying a laugh, or simply breathing.
If you’re looking to embrace this practice, I invite you to explore Meditate to Elevate, my guided meditation portal. It’s designed to help you carve out moments of calm, even during the busiest times of the year. With resources to support your meditation journey, you’ll find tools to connect deeply to yourself and those around you. A few years ago I also created a course called Presence Over Presents during the holiday season. This bonus course is part of the guided meditation portal!
This Christmas, I encourage you to focus on being present. Whether it’s through meditation, a shared meal, or a heartfelt conversation, find ways to cherish the connections that make life rich and meaningful.
May your holiday season be filled with love, laughter, and the joy of being truly present.
Mindfully yours,
Giana
